The work of the Royal British Legion has been boosted by a donation by energy network provider UK Power Networks Services.

The business, formed in October to design, build, operate and maintain electrical networks, as part of UK Power Networks, held a reception for clients and the media yesterday at Kings Place, near King’s Cross, London.

Charity partner for the event was the Legion, whose rehabilitation services play a crucial role in getting injured service personnel back into active duty or giving them a successful return to civilian life.

UK Power Networks Services is part of a major project providing new accommodation for soldiers.

As part of the evening event, it was announced that UK Power Networks Services has become the first corporate sponsor of the Legion’s newest rehabilitation unit.

It has 25 beds for those undergoing treatment, with 17 of those suitable for people using wheelchairs.

Basil Scarsella, Chief Executive of UK Power Networks, presented a £5,000 cheque to Lt Col Giles Stibbe of the Legion.

Mr Scarsella said: “We are delighted to be your first corporate sponsor. We will want to do more for the people who have served our country in the forces.”

Lt Col Stibbe, the first commander of the new rehab unit, said they were going to learn from previous schemes but also develop new ways of treating those injured in the line of duty, including exercise regimes centering on ice hockey, sitting volleyball and adapted parachuting.

“Thanks to your generosity, the young Britons who have put their lives on the line for the rest of us will have a better chance in the future,” he said.
