Construction of South East Queensland’s Moreton Bay Rail Link is set to begin after the regional government awarded a $650 million contract.
TrackStar, a consortium comprising Theiss, Aurecon, AECOM, HASSELL and Golden Associates, will build the 12.6 kilometre rail link, which will extend Brisbane’s rail network to the Moreton Bay region.
Proposals for the link are thought to date back to the late 19th century. Now, more than 100 years later, the first shovel is due to hit the ground.
The extension, which is scheduled to open in 2016, will include new stations at Kippa-Ring, Rothwell, Mango Hill East, Mango Hill, Murrumba Downs and Kallangur.
Leighton Holdings chief executive Hamish Tyrwhitt said: “For the nation, the Moreton Bay Rail Link demonstrates a growing recognition of the need to fill our infrastructure deficit in order to remain globally competitive.”
The TrackStar Alliance was established in 2006 to deliver a series of infrastructure projects around South East and Central Queensland.
The partnership has been valued at around $1 billion, having completed eight projects in the region, including the $475 million Richalands-Springfield segment of the Springfield Rail Project.
