VolkerRail awarded London Underground 4LM contract

Listen to this article

VolkerRail has been appointed by Thales to support the delivery of the London Underground’s Four Lines Modernisation (4LM) programme.

Formerly known as the Sub-Surface Lines resignalling project, the scheme will upgrade the signalling system on the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines.

VolkerRail will fit and test the new signalling equipment between King’s Cross and Monument on the District and Circle lines and Aldgate East and Upminster on the Hammersmith and City and District lines.

The 4LM project, which covers around 40 per cent of the Tube network, will mean trains on the sub-surface lines will be able run much closer together in future, allowing service frequencies to increase to 32 trains an hour.

Debra Fitzgerald, senior project manager at VolkerRail, said: “This project re-opens doors to an expanding market for VolkerRail.

“While London Underground’s infrastructure brings its own unique challenges and opportunities, VolkerRail’s extensive knowledge of Thales’ communications-based train control system and London Underground’s signal engineering operations, will ensure a positive outcome for all.”
