Voith to develop trams for China

Voith has secured a 7 million euro contract to develop low-floor tram technology for China.

The German firm will work alongside Xiangtan Electric Manufacturing Group to design China’s future light rail vehicles and oversee the project’s manufacturing planning.

Chairman of Voith Engineering Services in Chemnitz, Dr Vilmar Vogel, said: “We are very happy about this order.

“Our philosophy of providing vehicle development and the associated production planning from a single source is fully realised here.”

The project, which will start at the end of March for completion by the end of 2014, will produce a series of vehicles to meet the requirements of customers in various regions around the country.

In order to effectively communicate with its new partner, Voith will train 15 Chinese employees at its headquarters in Chemnitz.

Last year, Voith won a similar contract from Chinese rolling stock manufacturer CNR.

“We are glad that two of these companies have already decided in favor of Voith as an external development partner,” Dr. Vogel added.
