The first of 775 new train cars for San Francisco’s BART rail system has begun its 4,800-kilometre journey from Plattsburgh, New York, to California.
Car 3001x is now making its way to BART’s test centre in Hayward. The first production vehicles will start to be delivered from 2017, with all new vehicles in service by 2021.
They can’t be shipped by rail as they are not standard gauge, but 5ft 6in gauge (like that used in India).
