Network Rail has submitted new plans for its Derby maintenance hub following the government’s pledge to electrify the Midland Main Line.

Original plans for the depot, which were submitted in February, had to be withdrawn so they could be updated to accommodate 50 electrification maintenance specialists for the Midland Main Line project.

The new maintenance centre of excellence will bring together up to 400 staff from existing offices and sub-depots across the East Midlands.

Martin Frobisher, route managing director for Network Rail, said: “This maintenance depot is central to our plans to help sustain a modern, reliable railway in the East Midlands.

“The new depot will bring our frontline teams into a single location so we can better plan and resource the maintenance of the railway. It will also allow more focused, rapid and flexible response to incidents.

“The government’s proposal that it plans to fund the electrification of our main line is fantastic news for the region, giving us a railway which will be cheaper and greener to run. It also means we will need to recruit electrification maintenance teams who will join the team at Derby to look after the new equipment.”

The revised plans include an increase in office floor space by 300 sq m to a total of 2,500 and an increase in height of the finished floor level to avoid flooding.

Work on site is hoped to start in autumn of this year and it is due to be completed in December 2013.
