Tyne and Wear Metro joins Clap for Carers

Listen to this article

Tyne and Wear Metro’s depot workers paid a touching tribute to the NHS during ‘Clap for Carers’, held at 20:00 on Thursday 16 April, as maintenance teams at Metro’s Gosforth Depot in Newcastle lined up in front of the iconic train fleet.

In addition, frontline staff across the network joined the nation in the weekly ‘Clap for our Carers’ to show their appreciation and support for the NHS amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Customer Services Director, Huw Lewis, said: “It’s amazing to see so many of our frontline staff joining the nation in clap for carers. It’s our way of showing our appreciation for the heroic work of health care professionals in the NHS, and other key workers too, at this time of national crisis as we face this public health emergency.”

It was the fourth time the country has come together to show their gratitude for the NHS and key workers in such a fashion during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Clap for Carers message is circulating widely on social media and hundreds of thousands of people across the UK are participating.

The organisers of the campaign – which started online – say they decided to stage it because “during these unprecedented times they (NHS staff) need to know we are grateful”.
