Tunnelling option preferred for Calgary Green Line light rail route

Listen to this article

Engineers have indicated that tunnelling could be the best option for the central section of Calgary’s Green Line LRT project.

The project team had presented a number of different options for the Centre City alignment which included a combination of elevated, at-grade and tunnelled sections.

Option D, which would see the central section located entirely underground north of the Beltline, beneath the Bow River, all the way to Centre Street North, has been identified as the most suitable.

The 40-kilometre Green Line LRT line, once complete, will double the city’s light rail network.

Jon Lea, Green Line LRT project manager, said: “This is an exciting first step in designing the downtown segment of the Green Line LRT.”

He added: “We’re starting to get a sense of what this project could mean for the downtown, and we’re looking forward to continuing our work with Calgarians to further shape this new transit line.”

Further work will take place before a firm recommendation is made by the project next year.
