Tunnelling completed on Riyadh Metro Line 5

Excavation of the tunnel for Line 5 (Green Line) of the Riyadh Metro has been completed.

The Green Line is one of three lines being built by the FAST Consortium and one of six lines currently under construction in the Saudi capital.

With the tunnel now complete, track laying can begin. The Green Line is 13 kilometres long and includes 11 underground stations.

Including the Yellow and Purple lines, the FAST consortium is delivering around 64 kilometres of brand new railway and 69 two-car Metropolis trains.

Of the seven tunnel boring machines being used to construct Riyadh’s new network of metro tunnels, two have now completed their journeys.

As well as the announcement about the tunnelling works, Alstom – a member of the consortium – has presented a full-size mock-up of a Green Line trains.

A ceremony was held on June 8 which was attended by the Governor of Riyadh, His Royal Highness Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Transport Minister His Excellency Suleiman Al Hamdan.
