Riyadh’s “San’ah” tunnel boring machine (TBM) has broken through at Salah Al-Din station, a milestone in the construction of the city’s Line 5 (Green Line).
The TBM has now completed 1.2 kilometres of Line 5 and will now continue north, where it will eventually meet TBM “Dhafrah”, completing the 12.9-kilometre metro tunnel.
Ian Redmayne, Atkins’ project director for the FAST Consortium, said: “We are committed to meeting our deadlines and we are proud that both our Metro TBMs have been the first in their achievements – Dhafrah being the first to be launched and San’ah the first to break through in the Riyadh Metro Project.”
The FAST Consortium, which includes FCC, Samsung C&T, Alstom, Strukton, Freyssinet Saudi Arabia, Atkins, Typsa and Setec, is constructing three of the six proposed lines of the Riyadh Metro.
In July, the Bechtel-led BACS consortium, which is building two of six planned metro lines for Riyadh, commenced tunnelling works in the Saudi capital.
