Tube strikes ‘called off’

Please note: Tube strikes have now been suspended.

Reports say that the planned Tube strikes by driver members of the RMT have been ‘called off.’

London Underground has said that the strikes due to row over the sacking of two drivers have been suspended.

However, the RMT are yet to confirm this and still say the strikes are going ahead.

A spokesperson for the RMT earlier tweeted: “We get a written decision by LUL at 3pm so our decision will be based on that.”

Over 1000 drivers were set to walk-out next week and again in June due to unfair dismissal claims by two of the RMT’s members.

One of the sacked drivers, Eamonn Lynch, has won his claim of unfair dismissal whilst Arwyn Thomas is also undertaking an employment tribunal.

The strikes threatened to cause chaos for millions of passengers in London.

Labour’s London mayoral candidate, Ken Livingstone criticised Mayer of London, Boris Johnson’s handling of the situation:

“Boris Johnson’s failure to manage relations sensibly with the tube unions has already cost the capital with many Londoners changing their plans because of the threat of widespread strikes and disruption to public transport.

“Boris Johnson repeatedly told us there was no basis for this dispute, saying the drivers were properly dismissed under the procedures but now he has been found to have unfairly dismissed a driver and offered him another job.  It is a massive climbdown by the mayor that leaves his industrial relations policy in chaos.”
