Hitachi, Alstom and Stadler have been awarded contracts amounting to €4.5 billion to supply hundreds of new trains for Italy’s state-owned rail operator, Trenitalia.
Hitachi Rail Italy, a subsidiary of the Japanese manufacturer created following its acquisition of Italy’s AnsaldoBreda, has won the largest order – a framework deal worth €2.6 billion for the supply of up to 300 double-deck trains. It is the largest order the company has ever received – even prior to its acquisition by Hitachi.
Hitachi has released an image of its new Italian regional train, the Caravaggio, for which it has already been given a firm order for 39 five-car units.
The Caravaggio EMUs, which will have a total capacity of 656 and a maximum operating speed of 160 km/h, will be manufactured at sites in Pistoia, Naples and Reggio Calabria.
Alstom has been awarded a separate contract 150 trains and Swiss manufacturer Stadler submitted the most attractive bid for new diesel units.
Trenitalia confirmed that during the procurement process it also received offers from Bombardier, CAF and Hyundai Rotem.
