Trenitalia has signed a contract with Alstom for up to 150 new regional trains in an order worth €900 million.
Trenitalia has placed an initial order for 47 medium-capacity trains, for which the first train will be delivered in early 2019.
The single-deck trains will be supplied in two lengths, with the larger of the two containing 321 seats, and can be configured for either regional or suburban services.
Andreas Knitter, senior vice-president for Europe at Alstom, said: “This award confirms the excellent work done by our company in the field of regional transport over the last 15 years.
“Alstom has had an excellent return on experience with its Coradia Meridian, a successful train that fully respected delivery times, product quality and reliability.
This new order offers us the opportunity to reinforce our customer proximity and continue working with the Italian Regions and Trenitalia to improve local transport in the country.”
The contract includes an option to maintain the new fleet.
