TransLink has introduced the first of its Mark III Skytrain fleet into passenger service on Vancouver’s Expo Line.

The milestone was marked with a preview ride from Waterfront station on August 18 attended by TransLink chief executive Kevin Desmond and BC Rapid Transit Company (BCRTC) president and general manager Vivienne King.

Seven Mark III trains sets have been ordered as part of the Evergreen Project. The remaining six four-car trains will be brought into service in the next few months ahead of the opening of the Evergreen Extension.

Vivienne King said: “We’re excited to be launching the first of the new Mark III trains into service this morning, and we’re glad to know that so many of our customers are just as excited about them as we are.

“These new trains will help improve capacity on our crowded system, and give our customers a smoother ride and better experience when they’re travelling on SkyTrain.”

TransLink says the new units are lighter and more energy efficient than the existing fleet.
