The CITAL joint venture has opened a new light rail assembly and maintenance facility in Algeria.
The joint venture, which comprises Alstom, (Entreprise du métro d’Alger) and Ferrovial, will maintain existing Citadis trams and construct new stock for cities throughout the country.
Alstom’s has said the 46,000 square metre site will be able to roll out five new trams a month. The site has already completed 20 units.
Citadis trams are already in service in Algiers, Oran and Constantine.
The JV currently employs 200 people in Algeria and with more than 210 trams on order for Constantine and Oran, as well as cities like Ouargla, Mostaganem, Sidi Bel Abbes, Setif, Batna and Annaba, that number will rise.
Announcing the opening of the new facility, CITAL also confirmed an extension of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding the maintenance of intercity trains in the country.
