The cost of building the Varberg Tunnel – a new railway tunnel on Sweden’s west coast – is expected to exceed €400 million, Trafikverket has announced.
Trafikverket said the additional cost was mainly due to environmental and security modifications which have been made since the project was given government approval in 2013.
Project manager Andreas Gustafsson said “we can already say that the cost will be higher”. From SEK 2.9 billion (€311 million) to SEK 3.9 billion (€419 million) to be precise.
Construction of the 3.1-kilometre tunnel, which runs beneath the centre of Varberg, will take place between 2019 and 2024, and is part of a bigger project to double track the railway between Varberg and Hamra.
Prequalification documents for the turnkey project are expected to be issued in June 2016.
