Top Gear films at the Great Central Railway

Listen to this article

The BBC filmed an episode of Top Gear at the Great Central Railway recently, which was shown last night on BBC2.

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May attempted to make train travel cheaper, faster and more interesting by replacing the conventional carriages and locomotive with a series of caravans attached to a specially modified car.

After some three weeks of preparation at the GCR Rothley Carriage & Wagon workshops, Top Gear scenes were shot at all four of the GCR stations, as well as various line-side locations over four location days, where stunts by the presenters were created in Top Gear style.

Props included a stag’s head, a fire, and men in goggles.

A crowd of onlookers gathered on the railway’s bridges to watch the presenters race cars along the railway tracks between Quorn and Rothley station.

If you missed the episode, you can view it here until Sunday 7 August 2011.
