Bombela, the consortium that operates South Africa’s Gautrain, has enlisted Thales to design a new fare collection system for the Johannesburg–Pretoria rail corridor.
Thales, which supplied the original contactless ticketing system prior to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, will provide a new solution which will make use of “web-oriented technologies” and EMV payments.
Due to be in service by 2017, the new ticketing technology will be used across the entire Gautrain network, which covers 10 stations in South Africa’s Gauteng province.
