Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels has renewed its confidence with Thales with two new contracts for fare collection systems on the Cairo metro.

The French firm was previously awarded contracts to upgrade the fare collection systems on Lines 1 and 2 of the Cairo Metro – which became the first metro system in Africa in 1987 – and will now deploy ‘next generation’ equipment on the Line 3 extensions, covering Phase 3 to the west and Phase 4B to the east.

Phase 3 will last more than five years and involves equipping 15 stations. Phase 4B includes four stations and will last for two years.

The announcement comes a day after Thales announced it had successfully rolled out contactless QR ticketing technology on the Delhi metro, India.
