Stadler has won a contract to replace the current fleet of Voralpen Express trains with 11 new FLIRT EMUs.
The new trains will replace the existing fleet operated by Swiss South Eastern Railway (SOB) – some of which are around 40 years old.
SOB has ordered 11 new trains: six eight-car units and five four-car units. They will be capable of operating at speeds up to 160 km/h and the larger of the two trains will have capacity for 361 seated passengers.
The new units will come into service on the St Gallen to Lucerne corridor for the 2019/20 timetable change.
In an announcement online, Peter Spuhler, chief executive of Stadler, said: “The completely new trains will offer passengers on this beautiful stretch even more comfort and increase the driving pleasure considerably.”
Stadler could also built brand new trains for the UK including Eastern England with their new FLIRT trains to be built which would be named as “FLIRT UK” trains for Eastern England if Abellio, National Express and First Group does win the rail franchise in Eastern England and to replace the Class 321’s and Class 317’s used on the West Anglia and Great Eastern routes and Bombardier to build the Aventra Intercity rolling stock trains to replace the Intercity Class 90’s MK3 rolling stocks used on the London-Norwich route.
