Stadler has been awarded a CHF 134 million (€121 million) contract to supply 14 new trains for the Bern S-Bahn.
Delivery of the new four-car trains is due to begin in 2018 from Stadler’s Bussnang factory – some 140 kilometres northeast of Bern.
The new trains will be fully air-conditioned and have a maximum speed of 100 km/h.
Each unit has the capacity for 104 seated and 360 standing passengers.
The new trains will eventually replace the existing Mandarinli fleet on line S7 – the busiest line on the network, carrying an average of 24,000 passengers on weekdays.
Fabian Schmid, director of RBS, said: “Our trains are our calling card. They should be carefully tailored to the needs of our passengers, operation and infrastructure. With Stadler we have found a reliable partner. We are pleased to implement them with our largest ever vehicle procurement.”
