BAM Nuttall has been awarded a contract by Stadler to construct a new depot and refurbish another to support the commissioning and ongoing maintenance of its new Merseyrail fleet.

The multi-million contract includes a brand new depot in Kirkdale and an upgrade of the existing depot in Birkenhead North.

Kirkdale will include washing and stabling facilities as well as a maintenance shed, with run-through tracks, and a simulator suite. BAM Nuttall says it will be possible to extend the depot at a later date to accommodate 80-metre trains.

The existing depot at Birkenhead North will have a new train wash installed which will service trains on the Wirral line (Birkenhead North) and the Northern line (Kirkdale).

The depot works are scheduled to be completed in 2019 ahead of the arrival of the new trains. Stadler is supplying 52 four-car metro trains to Merseyrail, all of which will be in service by 2021. The order includes an option for 60 additional units.

BAM Nuttall has said it will use UK suppliers for the design and construction works. The company also plans to source all materials from the UK’s northern construction market.

Alan Cox, pre-construction director of BAM Nuttall, said: “We have been working collaboratively with Stadler during the tender stage of this exciting programme. From our Warrington office we have been able to provide locally based staff to support the bid and develop the programme.

“We will continue with this locally based approach throughout the delivery phase and also provide opportunity for our northern based supply chain. We look forward to delivering this key piece of infrastructure for Stadler and Merseytravel and supporting the local economy.”
