Sofia awards train and signalling contract for new metro line

A Siemens/Newag consortium has been awarded the contract to supply the trains and signalling system for line 3 of the Sofia Metro in Bulgaria.

The consortium will supply 20 “Inspiro type” trains and a CBTC signalling system capable of running under Automatic Train Operation (ATO).

The €140 million contract, which is for the first 8-kilometre section of the route, includes an option for 10 additional trains.

“The Bulgarian capital is bursting at the seams under an increased individual transport,” said Siemens.

Line 3 will run east-west for 18 kilometres, connecting with both existing metro lines. The line includes 18 stations, which will have half-height platform screen doors installed.

The train body shells will be manufactured by Siemens in Vienna. However, the fit-out will be carried out by Newag in Poland.
