SL inaugurates next generation commuter train

Listen to this article

Stockholm rail operator SL and Alstom have inaugurated the first of the city’s next generation of commuter trains.

The first of 46 new X60B units was unveiled at Stockholm Central station on April 4.

The X60B is a modified version of Alstom’s Coradia Nordic platform. Built at Alstom’s Salzgitter factory in Germany, two new EMUs will be delivered each month between now and November 2017.

The new trains are needed for the opening of Stockholm’s City Line in 2017. Due to its steep inclines and platform screen doors, SL’s X10 fleet will be unable to operate on it.

Alstom said the X60B has more than 150 upgrades to its earlier Coradia Nordic units, including the inclusion of ERTMS.

Once in service, SL will have 129 Coradia Nordic trains in service.
