Siemens to automate Paris Metro Line 4

Listen to this article

RATP has awarded a €70 million order to Siemens to prepare Line 4 of the Paris Metro for driverless operation.

Siemens will install automated CBTC signalling and control systems at 27 stations along the line, which it says will increase capacity by 20 per cent through reduced headways.

Jochen Eickholt, chief executive of Siemens Mobility, said: “Siemens has equipped about 300 route km worldwide with signalling technology for fully automatic operation, making it the market leader in this field. Automatic operation will enable Line 4 to offer a service interval of 85 seconds.

“At the same time, the automatic control will allow to reduce energy consumption by up to 15 per cent.”

Running north-south through the French capital, Line 4 links Porte de Clignancourt in the north of Paris and, once complete, Bagneux in the south.

Work is due to be completed in 2022.
