Siemens presented a Desiro RUS regional train for the Sochi network to Russian Railways president Vladimir Yakunin.

Yakunin said: “Siemens has a long history of cooperating with Russia since right after he revolution. So they have nothing to be afraid of since then. That’s why our collaboration went so smoothly because we have known each other so long.

“I hope in 2014 we will present the train which will run all the way from the Pacific to the Atlantic.”

In 2009, Russian Railways ordered 38 Desiro RUS trains, adding a further 16 five-car units in 2010.

The Desiro RUS have been developed to cope with Russia’s harsh wintery conditions and are able to withstand temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius.

Final delivery is expected in 2013 in time for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
