Siemens and the RWTH Aachen University have joined forces to design the “rail vehicles of tomorrow”.

The initiative, called “Future Train”, will look at “new technologies, innovative materials, development methods and manufacturing processes” that could shape the design and manufacture of future train fleets.

Announcing the partnership, Siemens said it would initially work with RWTH Aachen University to identify a selection of projects to be taken forward from 2017.

Jochen Eickholt, chief executive of Siemens Mobility Division, said: “The Future Train project provides us with the opportunity to use innovative approaches for the development of a completely new generation of rail vehicles.”
