SBB has awarded Rhomberg Rail Group subsidiary Sersa to install safety lighting inside the Simplon Tunnel between Switzerland and Italy.

The CHF 7 million contract will see illuminated handrails and other lighting fitted in both the north and south tunnels, which stretch for almost 20 kilometres beneath the Alps.

Work will be completed in 2015 in two eight-week installations between January and March and September and November.

In 2011, the tunnel, which was completed in 1906, suffered a fire. Although the main repair work was completed later that year, SBB has continued to carry out further upgrades to the structure.

In March 2012, the LEDIR consortium, which included Rhomberg, began a CHF 170 million project to bring the tunnel in line with modern safety standards.
