SBB orders firefighting trains

Listen to this article

Switzerland’s SBB has ordered three new firefighting and rescue trains from a Windhoff/Dräger joint venture.

The emergency trains, which are capable of speeds up to 100 km/h, will be stationed in Geneva, Melide and Brig, and will be delivered by the end of 2018.

The three units, which have been valued at CHF 38 million, will serve the new CEVA orbital network and Lake Geneva region, as well as the Ceneri and Lötschberg base tunnels.

Each train includes at least one rescue vehicle, a 50 cubic metre water tank and a firefighting foam system. The rescue vehicles can hold up to 60 people each and are fitted with an autonomous air supply.

SBB will also be able to use the trains to recover broken down vehicles up to 1,600 tonnes.
