Bombardier has unveiled the winning design for Sao Paulo’s new monorail system at the Business on Rails trade show.

The rolling stock manufacturer received 2,727 entries for its social media-based design competition to select the artwork that will decorate the city’s new Innovia Monorail 300 vehicles.

On the opening day of the show, Sao Paulo State Transport Secretary Jurandir Fernandes and the president of Bombardier in Brazil, André Guyvarch, unveiled the new design.

JP Ferreira, the winning designer, said: “This design competition is an intelligent and admirable initiative to take art to the street and generates stronger bonds between the population and public transport. My design represents the variety of cultures in a society.”

The 378 monorail cars for Sao Paulo Metro Line 15 are being produced at Bombardier’s new $15 million US monorail vehicle manufacturing facility in Hortolândia, Sao Paulo.

We envision a future of interconnected mobility with rail as the backbone of Brazil’s national transportation infrastructure

According to a study by Roland Berger for the European rail industry association, UNIFE, the railway industry market in Brazil and Latin America is forecast to grow seven per cent each year from 2015 to 2017.

In five years, the rolling stock market in Latin America is expected to be worth 3.3 billion euros per year, with the Brazilian market alone worth more than 2.2 billion euros.

“Leading innovation in the global railway industry is one of our missions at Bombardier,” said André Guyvarch.

“We envision a future of interconnected mobility with rail as the backbone of Brazil’s national transportation infrastructure. The superior products we show here are solutions that can ease Brazil’s economic development bottlenecks, increase capacity and modernise existing mass transit systems. They reduce travel times between major cities and improve the efficiency of freight transportation.”
