Railway Benefit Fund launch Railway Family Week

Listen to this article

The Railway Benefit Fund (RBF) are kicking off their second ever ‘Railway Family Week’ today and which will run until April 30th.

Thanks to the amazing support RBF received from the rail industry last year, the charity was able to raise over £50,000 throughout the week. This year, RBF are looking to smash that target, which is why they need the support of TOCs, freight, the supply chain, engineers, rail enthusiasts, retired railway workers and many more who want to help those in our industry.

Supporting the Railway Family

In 2021, 858 people benefitted from the charity’s financial services- one fifth of which were made possible thanks to the money raised from Railway Family Week. This year, funds raised will allow RBF to continue to support the most vulnerable families who are struggling to cope with the increase in energy prices and the cost of living. In the last few months alone, RBF have received over 100 applications for emergency fuel support and the demand is expected to increase as costs continue to rise.

Margaret, a 93-year-old ex-Railway worker, and the charity’s oldest applicant, had a medical condition that meant she needed to keep warm. However, Margaret’s energy bills were so high that she was contemplating turning her heating off. Luckily, her daughter knew about RBF and got in touch, meaning that they could provide immediate financial support for the heating bills.

How to get Involved

The hugely popular Auction of Experiences is now live, with plenty of ‘money can’t buy’ experiences that have been generously donated for Railway Family Week. There are some incredible prizes up for grabs, including cab rides, behind the scenes station visits, a tour of the British Transport Police dog school and even a day with Pete Waterman and his award-winning model railway.

Fancy a chance to win a table for four onboard The Royal Charter- a luxury steam journey on Friday 3rd June from Crewe to Windsor? Support RBF by entering their raffle, and be in with a chance of winning this fantastic prize worth £1,460.

Or you can simply donate to RBF, to ensure that they can continue to support those in the railway family at times of crisis.

Claire Houghton, CEO of the Railway Benefit Fund, said:

Our Emergency Fuel Fund has highlighted the real need for financial support- there are families who are choosing between paying their heating bills and putting food on the table. The money raised during Railway Family Week will allow us to help our railway workers through this challenging time.”
