Rail hamster rescued

Listen to this article

A runaway hamster has been saved from almost certain death by big hearted staff at Branksome Park station in Dorset.

Hammy, as he has been nicknamed, was found on the station without a ticket or any other identification. He has been temporarily housed with local vet, Henry Fielden, whose children plan to adopt him if the real owner can’t be traced.

Dr Fielden estimates the hamster is a year old and is in good health having made a successful recovery from his ordeal. ‘Quite often hamsters escape and are never seen again. You never find them outside as they are preyed upon,’ says Dr Fielden. ‘But he’s managed to survive. He’s quite a lucky little chap.’
