Rail Baltica forms part of the European Union’s Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T) and will eventually link Helsinki (by ferry), the Baltic States and Poland using a standard gauge line (1,435mm),
Currently, both Finland and the Baltics use Russian Gauge 1,520mm lines, making the transport of good into central Europe problematic.
The latest section of the new Rail Baltica line, from Kaunas in Lithuania to the Polish border, was opened on October 16 by Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius and the European Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc.
