Quito Metro has invited bids from manufacturers around the world as it looks to procure 18 new trains and auxiliary vehicles for a new mass transit system in the Ecuadorian capital.

Train builders have until June 16 to respond to the $192 million tender which covers the supply of 18 six-car electric trains, four maintenance vehicles and depot equipment.

Delivery time for the new fleet is 32 months.

The 23-kilometre metro will be built in two phases. Phase one is already underway, with stations under construction at La Magdalena and El Labrador.

Phase two, which is currently out to tender, will include the construction of 13 more stations, access tunnels, a depot and sub-systems.
