Punctuality continues to rise for Swedish rail services

Sweden’s passenger rail punctuality has improved slightly in 2014, continuing a trend of improving reliability over recent years.

Since 2011, passenger service figures have been gradually improving, achieving 90.3 per cent punctuality in 2014 – up from 90.2 per cent in 2013.

Sweden’s infrastructure manager Trafikverket has estimated that delays cost the country’s rail network SEK 5 billion (€530 million) a year.

Gunnar Malm, director general of Trafikverket, said the positive trend was ‘gratifying’, especially given the Västmanland wildfire in July and rail worker strikes in the south of the country in June.

Freight services performed slightly below the 80 per cent high achieved in 2013 (78.1 per cent) but improved on its 2011 (68.7 per cent) and 2012 (77 per cent) figures.
