PKP Cargo orders multi-system locomotives from Siemens

Siemens has netted a €75 million order for 15 multi-system Vectron locomotives from Polish freight operator PKP Cargo.

The order, which was officially announced at the TRAKO industry trade fair in Gdansk today (September 23), includes an option for five additional locomotives.

Of the 15 units, 12 will operate between Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. The remaining three locomotives will be used for services between Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland and Slovakia.

The Vectron’s multi-system variant has only just been certified for operation in Poland.

The first new Vectron will be delivered in January 2016. Deliveries are expected to be completed from Siemens manufacturing facility in Munich in 2017.

As well as locomotives themselves, Siemens will supply supportive IT and diagnostic systems and will maintain the vehicles for next eight years.

The contract also includes reliability targets which if not met will result in financial penalties for Siemens.
