Parsons Brinckerhoff has been awarded two contracts covering the design of both ‘high speed’ and ‘conventional’ railway systems for the UK’s second high speed rail line which will run between London Euston and Birmingham in the West Midlands.

The first contract, valued at £4.3m, covers the design of the high speed rail systems for Phase 1 of the project, from London to the West Midlands.

The second contract, valued at £3.7m, covers the design of modifications to the existing Network Rail systems at key interface points such as Euston, Old Oak Common and the connection to the West Coast mainline, to enable the construction of HS2 and ‘ensure minimal disruption to existing rail services’.

The designs will be used to inform the hybrid bill documents that are due to be submitted to Parliament by the end of 2013.

The company will also take a lead role across all designers for system-wide and operational and maintenance (O&M) issues, and will support other designers on civil engineering, construction and environmental issues in specific geographical areas.

“We are delighted to have secured these two key contracts on the development of the UK’s second high speed rail network,” says Darren Reed, director of rail at Parsons Brinckerhoff.

“HS2 provides a unique rail engineering challenge in terms of performance, environmental measures and stakeholder liaison and we are delighted to bring our international experience in major rail schemes and rail engineering to this iconic project.”
