The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) has today published its National Rail Trends (NRT) Yearbook for 2010/11.

The yearbook provides a comprehensive picture of the rail industry in Great Britain, highlighting a wide range of statistics on areas including rail usage, safety and performance. Key findings show:

  • 1,353 million franchised passenger journeys were made in 2010-11, a 7.6% increase from 2009-10.
  • 90.9% of all trains were on time in 2010-11.
  • The number of complaints per 100,000 passenger journeys decreased by 5.9% from 2009-10 to 2010-11.
  • The average increase in rail fares between January 2010 and January 2011 was 6.0%.

This will be the last NRT Yearbook to be published in this format as ORR is working to make rail data even more accessible to the public.

ORR intends to publish all NRT data exclusively on the NRT Portal by the end of 2011-12. ORR’s NRT Portal was launched in May 2011 on the ORR website and gives everyone access to a wide range of rail statistics throughout the year.

The NRT Portal holds information in one place, new data is uploaded onto the Portal each month.

The National Rail Trends Yearbook is available here.
