Operator chosen for Shanghai’s first driverless metro line

Shenkai, a joint venture between Keolis and Shanghai Shentong Consulting, has been awarded a five-year contract to operate and maintain Shanghai’s first automated metro line.

From the end of 2017, when the line opens, Shenkai will operate services on a 6.7-kilometre of Shanghai metro line 8, Line 8-3.

The contract, which was awarded by Shanghai Shentong Metro Group, includes two years of “pre-operational work”.

Around 73,000 people are expected to use the line every day, which will operate 15 trains an hour during peak times.

Work began on Line 8-3 in January last year. The line will be only the second automated metro in China.
