ÖBB is to put its first two new Cityjet EMUs into service in Vienna and Lower Austria next month.
ÖBB ordered 101 new electric trains in spring 2013 for use on regional routes around the country.
Built by Siemens, 31 three-car trains will be used for S-bahn services in Vienna and Lower Austria, 35 more will be put into service on regional routes in Lower Austria, 18 in Styria and 17 in Upper Austria.
By the end of 2016, 34 Cityjet trains will be in service: 16 in Vienna and Lower Austria, nine in Upper Austria and nine in Styria.
Delivery of all 101 vehicles is expected to be complete by January 2018. Although the trains are being delivered as three-car units, ÖBB said their would be scope to extend them to four cars.
Assembly of the vehicles took place in Germany with support from sites in Austria: Siemens’ factory in Graz supplied the bogies.
Both Siemens and ÖBB have endorsed the technical capability of the Cityjet. The new trains boast electrodynamic regenerative braking and a traction power recovery system which pumps waste heat into the carriages.
