Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), in partnership with Nomad Digital, has launched the railway’s first live onboard TV service.

Delivered in time for the European Football Championships in France, the service is now in use on two Railjet trains. Nomad has described it as the first live TV broadcast on a train anywhere in the world.

The service has been delivered as part of a 10-year partnership between ÖBB and Nomad. The UK-based company has also upgraded the passenger Wi-Fi and delivered a multimedia passenger information and infotainment system across 51 Railjet trains, which operate between Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

Andrew Taylor, Nomad Digital chief executive, said: “Building a local presence in Vienna is part of Nomad’s strategy to provide both centralised and local support to OBB, while establishing a strong presence across the DACH region to support our current and future customers.

“Improving the passenger experience is a fundamental objective in the work that we do with our customers, and in collaboration with ÖBB, we are delighted to be delivering the most innovative high-speed connectivity and passenger services in the industry to date.

“Delivering live on-board broadcast TV is a real game changer in our industry, and also coincides with the launch of a major international sporting event.”
