ÖBB Cityjet enters service three months early

ÖBB’s new Cityjet series has begun passenger service in Styria three months ahead of schedule.

The first of 18 Cityjet trains for the state is now in service between Graz and Bruck-an-der-Mur and between Graz and Spielfeld.

Of 101 Cityjet trains being built by Siemens to operate regional rail services in Austria, 18 will enter service in Styria – nine this year and nine in 2017.

A further 31 three-car trains will be used for S-bahn services in Vienna and Lower Austria, 35 more will be put into service on regional routes in Lower Austria and 17 will be delivered to Upper Austria.

Delivery of all 101 vehicles is expected to be complete by January 2018. Although the trains are being delivered as three-car units, ÖBB said their would be scope to extend them to four cars.
