Night Tube start date set

Listen to this article

Twenty-four hour services will launch on London’s Central and Victoria lines in August.

Night Tube, as the service has been dubbed, had been due to start in September 2015, but protracted talks with rail trade unions have resulted in a significant delay.

The 24-hour weekend service will be trialled on the Central and Victoria lines first before being rolled out across the Piccadilly, Jubilee and Northern lines in the autumn.

The announcement, which was made this morning by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, was followed up by a statement from the RMT union which said it believed there were still “unresolved issues” relating to conditions and pensions for maintenance workers and the safety case underpinning the new service.

Sadiq Khan said: “The Night Tube is absolutely vital to my plans to support and grow London’s night time economy – creating more jobs and opportunities for all Londoners. The constant delays under the previous Mayor let Londoners down badly.

“I have made getting the Night Tube up and running a priority, and London Underground has now confirmed that services on the first two lines will launch on 19 August.”

  1. The Bakerloo, Piccadilly, Northern, Jubilee, Circle, Metropolitan, District, Hammersmith & City and Waterloo & City lines could also operate a night tube service. Plus London Overground is also operating a night train service and may include Docklands Light Railway & Tramlink to also operate night services.
