New trains for Singapore’s NSEWL network

Listen to this article

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded Kawasaki Heavy Industries and CSR Qingdao Sifang a S$136.8 million order for 12 new six-car trains for the North-South and East-West Lines (NSEWL).

The first of the 12 trains, which are the last of 57 new trains planned to go into service on the NSEWL between 2016 and 2019, are expected to go into passenger service in mid-2019.

The six-car trains will be the first trains in Singapore to feature tip-up seats to allow for a flexible seating configuration.

Altogether, 99 new trains will be added across the network before the end of the decade, including on the Circle Line and the North East Line, increasing the network’s fleet size by almost 50 per cent.
