Chilean state railway EFE has ordered 12 new trains from Alstom for the country’s Santiago-Rancagua route.

The new EMUs, which will cost US $68 million, are set to begin service in 2014.

The five-year contract includes rolling stock and maintenance, with the option of extending to a maximum of 30 years.

Minister of transport and telecommunications Pedro Pablo Errázuriz said: “The decision of President Piñera to support the purchase of new trains for EFE, after almost 40 years, is a clear signal of where we want to go, incorporating the trains as one of the pillars of public transport that we are determined to strengthen in Santiago and regions.”

The contract includes an option to purchase eight additional units.

“This is the first purchase of new trains for this stretch in almost 40 years, which shows that we are moving in the plans that we have set ourselves as a company.

“Our goal is to build and implement a sustainable model for the development of EFE and the rail mode in Chile,” said Victor Toledo, president of EFE.
