Crucial renewal work planned to take place at four key level crossings in Lincolnshire, investing nearly £1 million to improve safety and reliability for road and rail users.
Motorists are advised to leave more time for journeys while Network Rail teams work around the clock to carry out essential improvements at Holton le Moor, Brigg, Butterswood and Little London level crossings.
Holton le Moor
Work will begin at Holton le Moor, with the A16 closed from 10.30pm on Friday 31 May to 6am on Monday 3 June. There are no footpaths along the road, but Network Rail staff will assist any pedestrians requiring safe crossing.
The crossing will then be closed again from 5pm on Saturday 7 June to 3pm on Sunday 8 June for teams to complete any outstanding work.
Brigg
Upgrades will take place at Brigg level crossing from 8pm on Monday 2 June to 7am on Thursday 5 June. A temporary signed footpath across the railway will be in place throughout, safely fenced off from the crucial work.
Butterswood
Work will be carried out at Butterswood level crossing from 9am on Saturday 31 May to 12.30pm on Sunday 8 June. Traffic management will be in place throughout the closure.
Little London
Engineering work will be under way at Little London level crossing from 9am on Saturday 31 May to 12.30pm on Sunday 8 June. Traffic management will also be in place for the duration of the closure.
All four crossings involve comprehensive surface renewal work, including replacement of deck units, cill beams (the interface between tarmac and railway), tarmac and road markings.
These upgrades – renewing decades-old features which are now life-expired – will make future maintenance more efficient and cost-effective.
While the work is ongoing, buses will replace trains between Cleethorpes and Barnetby*. Passengers are being urged to check www.natonalrail.co.uk before they travel.
Road diversion routes will be in place and clearly signposted throughout the closure periods.

“This significant investment will deliver more reliable infrastructure, requiring less frequent maintenance in the future and helping to keep both road and rail users safe.”
Philippa Cresswell, customer experience director for East Midlands Railway, commented: “We recommend customers planning to travel between Leicester-Cleethorpes between Saturday 31 May and Sunday 8 June to check their journey in advance of travelling. Rail replacement buses will be in place between Cleethorpes and Barton-on-Humber, with trains terminating at Lincoln.
“We would like to thank our customers for their patience whilst Network Rail carry out this crucial renewal work on the level crossings in Lincolnshire”.
