More rail services on the Hope Valley line

Rail passengers on the Hope Valley line between Manchester and Sheffield will have more services to choose from, starting in December.

Transport for Greater Manchester, in response to passenger feedback, has worked with Derbyshire County Council, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, the Hope Valley and High Peak Community Rail Partnership, Network Rail and Northern Rail to provide an extra service between Manchester and Sheffield, in both directions, during the evening peak-time period.

There will also be a new service for Chinley passengers.

A much-needed 1814 service from Sheffield to Manchester will now run, filling what is currently a two-hour gap in the timetable.

There will also be services from Manchester to Sheffield at 1645 and 1748. The existing 1718 service will run to New Mills Central.

Chinley will also have a service via Stockport, departing Manchester Piccadilly at 1723 – extending the service that currently terminates at Hazel Grove.

Councillor Doreen Dickinson, Chair of Transport for Greater Manchester’s Metrolink and Rail Network Sub-Committee, said:

“It’s important that we make sure train times suit passengers’ needs – especially on a route like the Hope Valley line, on which there are stopping services between two major northern cities.

“The Hope Valley line is a key commuter route for those working in Manchester and Sheffield. It also serves passengers who are travelling to either city for shopping and leisure, as well as those who simply want to access some of the region’s most beautiful countryside along the route.

“Officers from Transport for Greater Manchester have worked closely with Derbyshire County Council – which oversees the Hope Valley and High Peak Community Rail Partnership – to find the best way forward for services, and also with Network Rail and Northern Rail to coordinate the timetable changes.”
