Milan exercises option for more Leonardo metro trains

Listen to this article

Milan metro operator ATM has exercised an option worth €109 million with Hitachi Rail Italy for 15 additional Leonardo metro trains.

The 15 new trains are on top of 30 units already ordered by ATM, of which 25 are already in service on lines M1 and M2. ATM has the option to order a further 15 units under the original framework order.

ATM said the new trains will operate on line M2, lowering the average age of the fleet from 27 years to 16 years.

Deliveries will begin in late 2017, with the first of the new trains coming into service in early 2018.
