Merseytravel launches procurement for new trains

Listen to this article

Liverpool’s transport body, Merseytravel, has published an OJEU notice launching the procurement of new trains to replace its 40-year-old fleet.

Last month, Merseytravel published the findings of a business case which looked at whether the authority should purchase new trains or refurbish its existing fleet.

The Long Term Rail Strategy (LTRS) suggested that new trains would be needed in the coming years to meet increasing demand.

A preferred bidder is expected to be named by the end of 2016 and, with continued backing, the first trains could be operating on the network from the early 2020s.

The entire programme is estimated to cost £400 million, including infrastructure works at stations and depots and an upgrade to the power supply system.

Chairman of Merseytravel Councillor Liam Robinson said: “Giving the procurement process the green light to proceed is a decision taken both out of practicality and ambition for the Merseyrail network, the people who use it and the city region economy. We can’t stand still.

“Now it’s up to the bidders to help shape our vision. This isn’t about new trains because we simply want a new train set, it’s because we recognise that a new fleet, and the associated works, is essential for providing services that people and business can rely on, as well as being a stimulus for further economic growth.”

Merseyrail has predicted a 40 per cent rise in passenger numbers by 2028. New trains would allow the operator to meet this projected demand and potentially extend the network to Crewe and Warrington.
