A special poppy tram will run on the Metrolink network in Greater Manchester until Sunday 13 November as part of the Armistice Day commemorations.
The Lancashire Fusiliers tram, named after the historic regiment, has been decorated with poppies in support of the Royal British Legion’s annual appeal.
Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) Committee, said:
“We are pleased to be able to show our support for such an important cause, and as the poppy tram travels across the network, it will be a reminder to people about supporting this cause as well.
“Please support the poppy appeal and take a few moments to reflect not only on the Forces but on the families and friends that they have left behind.”
A further two trams 1001 (adopted Burma Star) and Poppy Appeal 1022 will also run across the network with poppy wreaths installed in both cab ends of the trams.
The Lancashire Fusiliers were formed on 5 November 1688 and have been involved in the American War of Independence, the Napoleonic Wars and both World Wars.
They were originally called the 20th Foot and changed their name to the 20th Lancashire Fusiliers on 1 July 1881.
They merged with three other regiments in 1968 to form the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.
Tony Dale, who works for Metrolink, was a member of the Fusiliers from 1975 to 1987.
He said: “This is a time to reflect not only on the Great War but on all conflicts that our armed forces have played a part in and still are.
“The armed forces are there to support the government of the day and do so with such bravery in the field.
“We must also remember the families and friends who may experience their loved ones who have served without question and may have received terrible injuries or worse still mental trauma, they all need our support.”
This Sunday, there will be changes to some Metrolink services while Remembrance Day commemorations take place; passengers can check the Metrolink website for more information.
